The Air Styler: Half the Price, Hotter Air
Dyson's Airwrap i.d. is the refined original: six attachments, a presentation case, and a published heat ceiling. It's $499.99 at Dyson right now ($649.99 list). Shark's FlexStyle does the same job — and doubles as a true hair dryer — at street prices of $199–$280. For most hair, this isn't close. For one hair type, it is.

Our verdict: the alternative wins. Long-term owners — including three-year users — report salon-level blowouts and a firmer curl set on stubborn hair, with no damage on healthy hair, and the Shark is the better dryer of the two. The honest catch: it runs hotter and louder. If your hair is fine, bleached or fragile, Dyson's 302°F ceiling is a genuine reason to pay up — that's the exception, and it's real.
Where the money goes
- The heat ceiling: Dyson publishes and enforces a 302°F cap; Shark regulates temperature but publishes no cap, and third-party checks put its max around 360°F. On healthy hair that heat is why Shark's curls set firmer. On damaged hair it's the risk.
- The refinement: Dyson's barrels switch curl direction on a single barrel, the kit is bigger, the case is nicer, and it's quieter in hand. Shark makes you swap barrels mid-head — a daily, minor annoyance owners consistently mention.
- The dryer: the FlexStyle twists into a proper L-shaped hair dryer; the Airwrap only dries through an attachment. If your styler is also your dryer, the cheaper tool is the more useful one.
